Stanislav Bytiutskyi’s LECTURE

First steps. The history of Ukrainian short films

Cinema began with a short format. Many famous directors started their careers with short films. This became especially noticeable with the advent of film education, where every young director took their first steps by making short films. Thus, a short student film was at the origins of Ukrainian poetic cinema in the 60s, and it was short films that started the boom of Ukrainian cinema in the 90s and the boom of young cinema after the Revolution of Dignity.

Ukrainian animation: short stories

The period of 1960s-1990s remains one of the brightest and most fruitful in the history of Ukrainian animation. It is this period that will be discussed during the lecture. The conversation will be based on three short animated stories that will show how themes, forms, and generations in Ukrainian animation changed during the Soviet period. Together we will try to understand how Ukrainian animators found a place in their works for national themes, criticism of the system, and state propaganda orders.
